Is your relationship stuck or in conflict? Does there appear to be constant fighting, avoidance, or growing apart? Perhaps you feel like just a “roommate” who isn’t being heard and you can’t agree on even the smallest things. Cotey can help!
Cotey helps couples learn to reconnect and re-engage with their partners for healthier attachment and intimacy in their marriage and relationships. In therapy, Cotey integrates Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method, which assesses each partner in the relationship and strives to build upon the Sound Marital House theory. Throughout these approaches, clients set out on a path to build a stronger attachment bond, heal past hurts, and manage the conflicts of life.
Cotey also works with adolescents and adults who suffer from anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, life transitions, and grief.
Throughout sessions, he uses therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems, Narrative Therapy, and EFT. Cotey’s focus in therapy is to build a partnership that allows for a safe and encouraging experience for clients to share their stories.
Cotey also has expertise in adoption, family/parenting issues, and MPE/NPE.
What is MPE/NPE, you ask?
Cotey works with a unique group of those who discover they have a Misattributed Parentage (MPE/NPE) through DNA testing companies such as AncestryDNA and 23andMe.com. Cotey’s passion for working with the MPE/NPE population comes from his own surprise parental discovery. As a therapist, he focuses on building meaning with individuals within this community, as well as, focusing on aspects of loss and grief that coincide with such a discovery. Cotey founded MPE Counseling Collective (a part of Right To Know ) which focuses on mental health and the MPE/NPE experience as well as building an ever-growing directory of MPE/NPE competent therapists to better serve the community. Currently, he serves as a mental health advisor for Right to Know, participating in regular seminars.
Cotey’s experience as a therapist involves working in private practice, ministry settings, and for a non-profit, that worked with young families of lower-income.
Cotey is originally from Oklahoma and has made his home in the great state of Texas for the last seven years. Prior to becoming a LPC Associate, he attended Oklahoma City University where he majored in instrumental performance and worked as a professional musician in the area. Feeling led to help others through ministry and therapy, Cotey moved to Texas to attend Dallas Theological Seminary. There, he graduated with a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies and Master of Arts in Counseling. Cotey currently sees clients in Denton and Coppell, Tx.
When he isn’t counseling, Cotey enjoys being with his wife, Brittany Bowman (who is also a counselor), and two kids. He’s also an outdoor enthusiast and lover of the Maine woods in the autumn season.
